Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan

The artwork in PM&C’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) was created by Lakkari Pitt, a proud Gamilaroi Ularoi/Yuwaalaraay woman from Walgett, New South Wales. Lakkari’s art is a contemporary take on the knowledge that her Elders and significant people in her life have passed down throughout generations. Through her art, she explores the movement, essence and stories of Country. ‘The artwork represents empowerment and truth telling. Each symbol and element used in the artwork has been carefully chosen to uplift Aboriginal people,’ Lakkari said.

A key theme throughout the artwork are journey tracks, which are used as visual representation of truth, symbolising the history of Australia pre and post colonisation. The journey tracks act as timeline, reminding us of events and the impacts, both good and bad.

Symbolism is used throughout the artwork, giving meaning and purpose to the beautiful imagery. The large circular symbols represent the Department as a central meeting place and our mission of creating opportunity for First Nations peoples. Other symbols represented throughout the artwork include the many different communities and tribes throughout Australia; the special connection and unique relationship Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with Country and land; change and positive growth; a reminder to the Department of the role to remain aspirational and empower people and communities through stewardship; and importantly, remaining hopeful for the future.
